  • — The PG-Bikes BlackTrail - world's fastest ebike!

       (Tuesday, 07 September 2010 21:56)

The PG-Bikes BlackTrail is currently the world's fastest ebike

It’s no secret that as gas prices soar and battery technology evolves, electric bikes are fast becoming the next big two-wheeled thing. That trend is clearly evidenced by the strong showing ebikes are making at this year’s Eurobike trade show, currently taking place in Friedrichshafen, Germany. Over the next several days, we’ll be showing you a few examples that we’ve spotted at the show, but to start things off... well, let’s kick out the jams and go with the “Oh come on, you can’t be serious” ebike. It called...

  • — The real deal on owning a velomobile

       (Monday, 06 September 2010 22:14)

Hugo Ciro and his Beyss Go-One velomobile

One fateful day back in 1984, I read an article in Popular Science entitled “Pedal-power slingshot.” It was about a vehicle called the Cyclodyne, which was a recumbent human-powered tricycle enclosed in a full polyester-and-epoxy streamlined shell. The writer claimed that he had easily got the thing up to 30 mph (48 km/h), and that it was designed to reach 53 mph (85 km/h) on flat ground. Good Lord, how I wanted one. Its US$3,800 price tag ensured that it would never happen, but that didn’t stop me from obsessing. That...

    Telefunken evaluating electric bicycle prototypes

If there’s an interesting aspect to the rise and rise of electric mobility devices, it’s the number of companies that were once associated with vastly different fields which are now investigating the arena of electric bicycles. At SinoCES in China last month we saw a white goods manufacturer proudly showing a new range of electric scooters alongside its new range of washing machines. At IFA today we spied yet another big name on two electric bicycles – 107 year-old German electronics company Telefunken... Continue Reading Telefunken evaluating electric bicycle prototypes

  • — Smaller, lighter NuVinci bicycle transmission revealed

       (Wednesday, 01 September 2010 22:13)

The NuVinci N360 Continuously Variable Planetary (CVP) transmission for bicycles

Three years ago, Fallbrook Technologies introduced its NuVinci Continuously Variable Planetary (CVP) N170 transmission for bicycles. The device created something of a stir in the cycling community, as it replaces traditional derailleurs with a rear hub containing metal spheres, plus it also replaces distinct gears with a continuously variable system of transmitting mechanical power – kind of like comparing a three-setting desk lamp to one with a dimmer switch. Riders can change gears even when not pedaling, they don’t need to worry about improper chainring/cog...

Kia Electric POP Commuter Vehicle Concept

The continued trend towards smaller and lighter urban commuter vehicles continued today with Kia showing glimpses of an all-new electric concept car it will reveal at the Paris Show on September 30. Called the ‘POP’, Kia’s three-meter, three-seater was styled at Kia’s Russelsheim design studio where head of design Peter Schreyer has been husbanding the revitalization of the Kia family DNA. .. Aerodynamics meets art: NeilPryde launches high-end road bikes

If you're into windsurfing, you'll most likely be familiar with the NeilPryde brand. Now the company is taking a step in another direction by diving into the high-performance road bicycle market. Designed in partnership with BMW's DesignworksUSA, the result is a highly aerodynamic machine developed from extensive wind-tunnel testing and computational fluid dynamic modeling that makes use of complex – and very distinctive – aerofoil cross-sections in the carbon fiber frame and forks, while weighing in at as little as 6.75 kg. Slick in more than just looks!.. Continue Reading...

    • — AutoTram combines a bus and a tram to get the best of both worlds

         (Friday, 13 August 2010 04:02)

The AutoTram research platform for testing new components and systems for use in the elect...

As part of its research into the public transport of tomorrow, researchers at Fraunhofer have developed the AutoTram – a vehicle as long as a streetcar and as agile as a bus. Combining the best of both vehicles it has no need for rails or overhead contact lines, instead the “bustrolley” rolls on rubber tires and follows a simple white line on the road surface. It was constructed to serve as a research platform in the institute’s “Fraunhofer System Research on Electric-Powered Mobility”...

    • — The VeloMini folding electric bike

         (Wednesday, 04 August 2010 22:37)

      The VeloMini folding electric bike

Electric bicycle designers are continually coming up with new ways to fold the humble bicycle to make it easier to carry when not being ridden. The latest to catch our eye is the VeloMini, a light-weight folding electric bike featuring a 180 watt brushless hub motor that will transport a person from eight to ten miles at speeds of up to 12 mph (19 km/h). When it’s not being used it folds down to a compact form 18-inches tall that fits into a carrying case roughly the same size as...

    • — Go go gadget straddling bus! Chinese super-buses glide over traffic

         (Wednesday, 04 August 2010 02:54)

      The Straddling Bus

China is home to more people than any other country on Earth, and they're moving into megacities at a rate that's simply unprecedented. Managing a transport plan for such a colossal number of people presents a traffic congestion and pollution quandary the likes of which we've simply never seen before. The Straddling Bus is an amazing public transport solution that drives over the top of the cars on a slightly modified road, able to stop without interrupting the traffic flow and to glide over the top of congestion. This go-go-gadget bus is far quicker and...

    • — Cyglo bike tire embedded with LED lights

         (Wednesday, 04 August 2010 02:20)

The Cyglo bike tire embedded with LED lights

We’ve covered a number of products designed to light up a bicycle to increase the safety of nighttime riding. Such devices usually involve adding lights to the pedals or spokes of a bicycle but a new invention from Night Bright Tyre Ltd. adds LED lighting to an altogether new part of the bike – the tires themselves. The Cyglo bike tires feature tough and durable LED bulbs that are built into the tread or wall of the tire to form a perfect ring of light when...

With this year’s Tour de France still a recent memory, those of us with an appreciation for fine European racing bicycles may now be experiencing a fresh bout of bike lust. Not all of us, however, have $US6,000 or so to drop on a bicycle, and even if we did... bikes like that are not well-suited to everyday commuting, and are really more bicycle than most of us will ever need for recreational riding. You no doubt still dream of owning a well-bred...

         (Monday, 26 July 2010 17:36)

The Etta semi-recumbent cargo bike designed by Nick Foley

The upright bicycle riding position offered by the familiar diamond-shape frame has been completely abandoned by designer Nick Foley in favor of a semi-recumbent driving pose. His Etta 3-speed prototype is claimed to offer users a more comfortable, natural ride whilst also providing better all-round visibility and a built-in storage compartment. Priestmanngoode's Mercury high speed train concept

In an effort to persuade the UK Government to move forward with the project as soon as possible, design studio, Pristmanngoode, has unveiled its high speed train concept, the Mercury. The company has previously worked with Chinese rolling stock manufacturer, Sifang, to design high speed trains for China and other parts of the world and now believes that a new high speed train is vital for the future of Britain. Perhaps taking London’s famous buses as an example, the Mercury is a double-decker train that incorporates a flexible, open plan design that...

           (Thursday, 15 July 2010 11:29)

The Freerider Skatecycle from Brooklyn Workshop

As devices such as the Pulse Kick ‘n’ Go Xcelerator and T-Board show, designers are always looking for new and interesting (and hopefully profitable) ways to provide kids with the various cuts and scrapes that are an essential part of growing up. The latest pretender to the throne still occupied by bikes, skateboards and scooters is the Freerider Skatecycle – a two wheeled recreational vehicle that allegedly combines the “foot control of snowboarding, the balanced turning of skateboarding, and the nimble, undulating...

           (Tuesday, 13 July 2010 01:00)

        The Fubi folding bicycle prototype

Sick and tired of having his bike stolen while studying in Stockholm, Ulf Laxström decided to design a foldable bike that was easy to store inside, but retained the functionality and styling of standard full-sized bicycles. His solution was the Fubi (an abbreviation for “Future bike”) that Laxström says has all the characteristics of a “regular” bike, with its ability to fold up just an added bonus... Journeys from home to the nearest bus stop, train station or news stand may well prove too far for walking, but not really far enough to justify the expense of getting in the car. Designed to strap over existing footwear or to step into, the wearable motorized shoes could just be geeky enough for tech...

The XALOC system, incorporating the ARID Navigator, helps drivers find free parking spaces

It’s a frustrating situation. You’re aimlessly circling the blocks, hoping to stumble across a free parking space, but with no clue as to where such a space might be. Well, as we so often like to say here at Gizmag, “A new invention could change that.” Researchers from Spain’s Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) have helped develop a system that detects free parking spots, then guides drivers to the closest ones using a process that’s reportedly better than GPS...              (Tuesday, 15 June 2010 07:05)

Dahon's BioLogic ReeCharge makes the most out of pedal power

If your bike has a hub dynamo, Dahon's Biologic ReeCharge lets you run portable USB powered devices while you ride. Whilst we've recently seen bicycle recharge kits, the ability to charge via USB is pretty novel. Basically it's a battery with a USB port that charges from the energy generated by your dynamo and then tops-up your device when you plug it in. That means you can charge the battery and then charge your device when you arrive at your destination, or, if it's practical, charge...

With its T3 Series electric standup vehicle (ESV), California-based company T3 Motion took aim at the police, security and site management markets with a no-noise, no-pollution, fast-response, one-person vehicle that delivers long battery run time, short recharge time and operating costs of around 10 cents per day. It expanded its line up with the four-wheel CT Micro Car that is designed to service similar markets to the T3 Series ESV. Now the company is adding to its fleet with the GT3, a two-passenger, plug-in consumer electric vehicle that...

Cyclists are already doing their bit to help the environment by eschewing a fossil-fuel guzzling transport option. Now they can do a little bit more using Nokia’s newly unveiled Bicycle Charger Kit which lets cyclists charge their mobile phone using pedal power. The kit employs a bottle dynamo that is driven when in contact with the front wheel like those found on ye olde time bicycle lights... Continue Reading Nokia's Bicycle Charger Kit a stroke of genius

UPDATE: econogo launches the 1500w electric yogo scooter

British company econogo has launched the yogo, the first electric scooter that uses a fully detachable and portable lithium battery. Traditionally, electric two-wheelers in the UK have used impractical fixed silicon batteries which require the owner to run an extension lead from a mains electricity socket to the vehicle’s integrated battery. yogo owners can remove and charge the two LiFePO4 batteries inside an hour. Two spare batteries offer the option of an instantaneous swap for a further 44 miles of range. The GBP1999 (USD$3000) yogo has a 1500W motor,...
